Nestled in a tiny, romantic courtyard in the Old Town of Tallinn, the Capital City of Estonia, restaurant LEE (formerly Leib) has been one of Tallinn’s favourite gourmet spots for years. Created by the Kristjan Peäske & Janno Lepik, it’s always had a very strong, but straightforward vision & commitment to sustainability, including, of course, honest wines, food & ingredients. Chef Hiro Takeda’s contemporary, seasonal and local menu is matched by an impressive selection of wines.
The Champagne section, for example, includes terroir geniuses like Selosse, Egly-Ouriet & Tarlant besides the big names. The Bordeaux and Burgundy’s sections provide some honest value. The magnum section, if you’re here to impress your party, is full of gems. And there’s even a page dedicated to Estonian wines - whites, reds, and sweets!
Lee’s suggestion: La Bruja de Rozas, Commando G 2018. Why? Here’s their insightful comment: “We’re passionate about this wine and its story. A few years ago, we purchased the entire vintage available in Estonia, and we’re now down to the last bottles. What we love most about Commando G is how they’ve revived forgotten old vineyards, bringing them back to life to create truly vibrant wines. In addition, this wine has developed beautifully in the bottle over time, making it a rare and special treat for our guests. It’s also a super cool way to show that great wines don’t need to cost a fortune.”
Our choice: Estonian grass-fed beef tenderloin with a magnum of 2013 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape! Another reminder that great wines don’t have to cost fortune (especially in magnum)!
